Alert's 50th anniversary

Jerry Proc has added a great overview of the Alert 50th anniversary celebrations that were held at Alert and Leitrim in September. Alert's role as an operational SIGINT site officially began on 1 September 1958, and the station remains an operational SIGINT site today.

SIGINT experimental operations were begun at the site in 1956 under the auspices of the Air Force, but Alert Wireless Station was an Army operation when it officially opened in 1958. The station transitioned to the CF Supplementary Radio System after its 1966 creation and subsequently to the CFIOG after the latter's 1998 creation. As of 1 April 2008, Alert has returned to being an Air Force responsibility.
